Will this be a Client version issue?

Hi,
I'll state now that I'm in awe of this project. Absolute awe! So thank you!
Now since I'm new, I'm investigating what I need to get a server up and running. So before I start (in vane?) I'm worried that I may get it wrong from the get-go. Here's why.
I've read posts about setting up a server, the FAQ, etc. and I'm wondering now that since I'm only running the trial copy and it is patched up to be recent (post Jan.9), can I still get a server up and my client logged in?
Right now I'm guessing the recommendation is I buy official copies of the game. No problem, I'll do that if it's still necessary! But even after that, how do I get around the version issue? If I patch up from the install, it will take me up to current. And from what I've read, that's too new.
What's recommended?

P.S. Oh, I'm not in front of my client right now so I don't have version info to submit. But it's an up to date trial client as of Feb. 1st, 2009.

Once you buy the copy of the game that is supported, you don't run the patcher program...ever!

I believe it even tells you in the setting up a server, or playing with the client posts on what program to execute. There should also be numerous posts about the forum you could search also about how not to patch.
