HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Backups

Post by LethalEncounter » Thu Feb 05, 2009 7:22 pm

If anyone is interested in backup up (ripping) hd-dvd or blu-ray movies I'm going to be creating a small website over at http://hd-backup.net that will describe in detail all the steps required. The site will focus on legally making backups of your collection so that you aren't forced to buy the movies again if they are scratched or damaged. It will probably take a week or more to get it fully up and running because I'm already stretched pretty thin, but I decided to set up the site after wasting quite a bit of time myself trying to figure out all the tools required to do this. It might help someone else out.

Sounds cool, man. I am so far behind the times, I just recently learned about DVDFab for backing up my DVD collection to ISO's. Figure 5 years after the petaflop processors come out, I'll probably just be hearing about them... :|

Hey LE,

Hasn't anybody told ya HD-DVD is dead? :P

In all honesty, I would love to start backing up my Blu-rays, but finding space to store 125 25-50GB ISOs may be tough ;op

Hence how important it would be for people who do own HD-DVD discs and players to make backups in case they got lost or damaged :D

He actually mentions that on his web page.

Heh yah, but I have to do something with my HD-DVD collection while it still works :) For Blu-rays, I'm actually reencoding them into H.264 (MPEG-4) because the standard Blu-ray codec (VC-1) is extremely inefficient with space. Reencoding the main movie from the VC-1 codec to the H.264 codec reduces the space needed from 20GB-30GB to 10GB-12GB without reducing the quality. Ive actually become pretty good at it by now :P I'm storing all the completed backups on my NAS so that I can watch them on my TV by pressing a few buttons on the XBMC remote. All of them include the subtitles and chapters as well. You can save all the special features separately if you want, but unfortunately XBMC can't play any of the movie's menus. However, once they are able to do the menus as well I'll just reprocess them again if I want the special features.

Yah I currently have above 600 GB left on my NAS, which is enough for about 50 movies. Once that is full I'll make another fileserver. Hopefully the 2TB drives are cheaper by then and I could build a huge RAID 5 :)
