Questons from a New Guy<---

Post by joneric1014 » Wed May 27, 2009 7:00 am

Hi!

I just discovered what emulators are, and I am downloading the latest EQ patch so I can play on some of your worlds.

My curiosity was peaked when I discovered a person could download the tools and create their own server. How hard is this? I mean, my computer skills are as pro level as being able to build my own myspace page, maybe create a message board, but that's about it. I was wondering if its possible with someone of my weak skill set to follow a tutorial and set up my own world or not?

I have some pretty hot ideas for rebuilding an EQ world, but I'm not sure how in depth the server setup is, and how hard would it be to do so?

I'm a scientist by trade, so I'm probably smart enough to figure out what needs to be done, but before I embarked on the endeavor, I thought Id check with the pros, and see if it would be a huge waste of time or not.

Any advice?

Think its possible for me to build my own server, or should I just stick to playing the ones you guys are running?

Thanks in advance!

Jon

PS: I looked for a tutorial or some sort of guide on this particular topic already, but found nothing. I found guides on how to setup servers and stuff, but nothing specifically about my question.

As a scientist, I imagine you are familiar with the phrase, "the simplest solution is probably the correct one". :)

Setting up a server for this emulator is far easier than a myspace page! One, you don't have Tom harassing you every other day with idiotic crap you care nothing about, but cannot block him... that bastard.

Ouor guides and tutorials are more than adequate to set up a server - since there have been 1500 of them set up thusfar, so I suggest taking the time to research a little more. Stickies and Wikis are your friend.

Also, check out the ServerPack (Releases forum) for a no-brainer start to EQ2Emu.

Welcome and good luck.

Awesome sounds like I can do it. Im going to start the research process now, and see what I can come up with.

My thoughts where just to pretty much leave the game engine and world as they are, and just rearrange the mobs and storyline to tell a better story.

Im totally excited to get started!

Thanks again dude!

Well don't get too excited about content, since none has been released yet. :) The ServerPack has some samples, but nothing completed.

The server code is in Alpha, and until it moves to Beta, we're not releasing any Content - at least not entirely. ServerPack was created for those who cannot wait, and want to build custom worlds themselves, and shows how to do that from the ground up.
