LE,
Something we might need to consider when setting up our characters is to include all skills/abilities that the character may inherit from it's parent class/archetype.
For instance, if I create a Guardian, I expect to get all the skills, abilities, arts, or spells awarded to Warriors or Fighters as well. I have set up starting_spells for Fighters, the Taunt ability. However, when I created my Guardian, he had no such ability. If I set the starting_spells specifically for Guardian, then I get what I expect. But I should be able to give the 6 fighter classes their skills with a single entry... yes?
Am I correct in this? Or misunderstanding how we should be setting up our skill/ability assignments?

Here's a bump from hell. The more items I test myself, the more I am noticing my characters do not possess all the "skills" they should at creation... so here's the question to the community of players.

When a character is born (created), should they - from the very start - have the skills required to use every piece of equipment they will ever use in their lifetime (restricted by race or class, of course)?

Ie., Tower Shields, Round Shields, Rapiers, Great Swords, Axes, Spears, etc.


Example Item: Blade of the Forgiven - Someone bugged this as not equippable, but it's merely because they lack the skill to equip it



There are a ton of skills players do not have, and I just need to know if they should have them at create time, or is it something they learn later via books or some other means.

Yup you are right, now that I recently added the ability to determine which base class a player's class responds too I can easily add this in.

Added the ability to use base classes in starting_items, starting_skills, starting_spells, and starting_skillbar.

Awesome, so now all I have to do is determine what base[class] gets what skill :)

If anyone still wants to tell me if these skills you are born with, or learn-as-you-go, it will be helpful.

I am logged into live now, checking my character's Persona / Skills screen. I see nothing about Great Axe, Great Spear, Great Sword, etc... Do we not see these skills in-game?

My character wields a Great Hammer, and I do not see even a Hammers skill on my toon. Am I just missing it?

These were used back in the day I believe. I don't remember seeing them anymore but I believe we still have them.

Isnt it rather the weapon/eqipment has a character class assigned to it rather than the character have the weapon assigned to it.
Only skill i know of are "you get better at " piercing/slashing etc etc?
Just throwing a thought out there, sorry if its a brain fart ;p

Not exactly. Equipment does have a character Class assigned to it - that's what you see at the bottom in the classes list in Examine.

But Equipment also has "Skills" that are required to use them. That skill doesn't appear to always be displayed (at least in my research). In order to use a Tower Shield, the player has to have the Tower Shield skill - but from what I think I am learning here, Tower, Round, Buckler, (etc) Shields, all are "child skills" of a parent skill "Shields".

So perhaps when we're done here, if you as a character have the skill to use a Shield in general, then you can also use all forms of shields - though I disagree with that concept. I always thought a gnome SK running around with a Tower Shield would be pretty silly... but I am still waiting for more clarification on all these indirect skills and how they apply.

If I cannot see the skill in-game, I am not sure how it is used - except in the above parent/child assumption.

I have a very beefy Eq2 manual (hard copy) with all of the weapons and armour that the classes, sub classes, and archetypes use. Would you like me to list them as written? Mind you this may be dated information and they may have changed these in patches, and by dated i mean a few years dated.

Nah Ily, that would be helluva lot of typing ;) We know what the data IS - I just need to know how it is assigned. And since I can no longer view my character's skill of Great Axe, how do I know I have that skill, to use Great Axes? Or am I to assume because I can use a 'slashing' weapon, Axes of all kinds are automatically covered?

That's the question.
