Is EQII your favorite MMO?

Post by Benas » Sat Jun 20, 2009 7:02 pm

I'm just curious as to how many people are around here that don't call EQII their favorite MMO, and why those people are interested in this project. My favorite MMO is probably Vanguard, or I should say it was before SOE got a hold of it. Normally I would say good ol' EverCrack is my favorite because it was the first MMO I ever played and that it revolutionized the genre, but I think Vanguard was superior all-in-all (except for all the lag, bugs, and crashes). To be honest I never like EQII, I just played what the rest of my family played. That is until the second expansion, then the game became halfway decent in my eyes. Despite my indifference for the most of EQII content and my dislike of SOE, I want to help the emulator team because I have always enjoyed emulators, helping out gives me something to do between work and sleep, and it is the game that I have spent the most time on (played it since the launch date).

Anyways, what is your favorite MMO, and if its not EQII then what game is it and what made you interested in this emu project?
This is not my escape from reality, this is my reality.

Not 100% sure as to which would be my fav, I still love EQ (was my 1st real eye opener to pc/online games on a large scale) , but as im a sucker for eye candy(and still a big kid) , i was drawn away from the horrible EQ graphics., to try others as they popped up.
I still occassionally go back and poke around (multiple friends still play EQ),
Lotro has been a LOT of fun , play/graphic and story wise, (plus a 1 off lifetime sub makes it soooo much easier)
EQ 2 initially attracted me with it being the new game out there, and it LOOKS amazing.
I love the tradeskilling side of things , i still have a lvl 39 carpenter floating around on splitpaw somewhere..The interaction of building furniture, and setting up peoples houses is huge for me ..
I tried Vanguard , but it just didnt feel right(nothing wrong with it, just didnt like it)..Wow was fun for a while , but it seemed all about speed, and a bit too cartoony (is that a word) for me.As for emu's i love the idea of people getting a project of a game , and finding ways to (generally) improve/fix it, plus customization can be a whole lot of fun..( played a Gnome Beastlord for a while on an EQ-emu server).
Would you count Diablo1&2 as (partially - with battlenet) MMO's (if so ) i often go back and play them for a laugh..looking forward to D3.

My favorite, EVE Online. If it weren't for the gate campers (pvssies can't gank folks in the low-sec systems, have to pick on mom&pop sailing through empire space), and the fact that no matter how hard you try, you will *never* catch up with the other players who have skilled up for 5 years... it is one of the most well thought out, technically perfect, scientifically accurate SciFi games I have ever seen.

Did I mention beautiful?

Why am I on the EQ2Emulator team? Because I love a challenge, and most everything I do here is right up my alley; QA, Database, and Project Management. I have been on many other teams before and this team works amazingly well together; no drama, no egos, no power trips, and no whiney sniveling teenage-minded dickheads to ruin what otherwise is great fun building an emulator of my second favorite game ever; Everquest 2.

Good post, thanks for it!

Does LOTRO have a good archer class (it they are called rangers, then I will have to play)?

I didn't mind EVE but I like space games that are twitch based instead of clicking buttons. I blame that on my days playing Colony Wars for the PlayStation. I can agree with you when you say it is a beautiful game though because the graphics are breathtaking.

WARNING: A LITTLE BIT OF BROWN NOSING THE DEVELOPERS IS ABOUT TO OCCUR

With these brilliant and extremely talented people working hard on the project, I am sure you will be able to play a perfect replica of EQII for free in no time.

The original Star Wars Galaxies was my favorite until SOE or whoever ruined it. WoW and EQ2 were set to come out about the same time, EQ2 came out first but really shouldn't have, wasn't quite ready for prime time I think, but I'm sure SOE wanted to beat Blizzard to market which I think was a mistake. SOE probably lost some market share with all the problems in the beginning, but after awhile EQ2 turned out pretty good. The past couple of expansions though SOE has been all over the map trying to please all type of gamers and it has not turned out that great, it's been ok, but some things got out of control and that is why you are seeing a lot of re-vamps lately.

SWG and EQ2 are the only 2 I have subscribed to, I've tried the others, but these 2 MMO's have been the best for me.

I am curious to see how Bioware's new MMO based on Star Wars is going to be.

EQ2 is my favorite. It was EQ1 once upon a time, upgraded from the old AD&D pencil and paper game. Once I found out about EQEmulator, I've been following the project for as long as I can remember. After 8 years of EQ1, EQ2 came along (which I got a lucky break and played the beta!). The graphics were better, the engine (at the time) revolutionary, and though it lacked one of my favorite classes (Beastlord), it offered the same thing plus a little more. I am disappointed in how newbified the game has become, and since EQ2 has been out I've been following the EQ2Emu project since day 1.

My wife has been bursting at the seams over the past couple of years, waiting for this project to go beta. So I've taken to learning C++ and VS2005 so that I can help code this monster. I do plan on running a server myself (at the moment I'm lacking the hardware for such a setup) when the Emu is is more mature, as well as offering a few tools for in-game administration (the project is currently on hold at the moment while I'm learning SQL and LUA, and how to make it work alongside XML).

I've tried other MMORPG's in the meantime (WoW, Shaiya, Runes of Magic, and of course EQEmu, etc.), and none of them can compare to EQ2. There's always something missing from them that only EQ2 has, and some of my motivations in life have been because of the pull it's had on me (hmmm...pay the phone bill or get a bigger video card?). :D
I am the UI Master...there is no charge for my awesomeness.

Arremis, great to see you still around mate. Thought we lost you to the dragon known as "real life" :D

Looking forward to your in-game Admin tools. I gave it a shot, my brain dribbled from my ear, and I wrote the web-based DB Editor in use by our team. :) Hopefully you'll have better luck.

I have played a lot of them, and they all suffer from this one, indescribable flaw that gnaws at the back of my head.

I have to admit though, Eq2 is my favorite PURELY on the basis that it was my first MMO that I played, and I just wanted more! WoW is horrible (in my opinion) it just wasn't for me. I liked EVE, hell, I loved it, but that gnaw wouldn't stop. I don't seem to have that when I play Eq2. So I kept with Eq2!

EQ2 is fun, but most of my friends play WoW... so I end up playing WoW.

Dang these are some old posts, I'm a new comer when it comes to emulation, Im not new to eq however. Been playing eq2 sense launch up until about 3 months ago, Ive also tried WoW, Vanguard, LOTR and a ton of free MMO's out there and hands down for me Eq2 is still the best. For some odd reason i never ran into this site before while looking for eq2 private servers, Im pretty happy that i found this place though, i share the deep interest for the game and i'm already thinking about how i can help out.

Glad to hear it, a good place to start helping is to start breaking stuff. Just make sure you report it!
