CPU
Yay getting a new cpu! lol
I currently have a AMD Athlon 7750 dual core. I just ordered this morning an AMD Phenom II X4 945 to replace it. I heard AM3 is backwards compatible so lets hope I don't have any problems...
I also ordered a Logitech G110 keyboard to go with it since I've been wanting one with illuminating background and stuff.

Re: CPU
AM3 is backwards compatible with certain AM2+ Motherboards. But be aware, certain processors such as the 955 Black Edition, 965 and maybe even 945 (Phenom II X4, mainly) that are over 95 Watts will not work with certain motherboards.
Every motherboard manufacturer has a CPU support list, usually listed on their main website. I recommend you visit that website and check their support list to at least ensure that you have a supported motherboard. Sometimes, and especially the case with newer processors, a BIOS update will be necessary to detect the new components.
It will be quite a difference from the 7750 to the X4 945 but not astronomical. Avoiding problems means thinking preemptively. Follow what I said and you should be alright.
For the keyboard, I find it a waste. I currently have a 40 inch television in my room and I use a wired Dell Keyboard and Mouse, even when it's completely dark. I don't need any illumination since I know where all the keys are...and for 'stuff'...I have everything I need in my Linux terminal or the Start menu in Windows 7.
Best of luck with your new processor!

Damnit Arremis! This is what useless cheering does! Look at my informative post, what if he finds out the new processor doesn't fit on his existing socket? Yarg!Arremis wrote:Now everyone turn to the person next to you and shoutJCL wrote:Yay getting a new cpu! lol

Yeah the manufactuer says "Supports AMD® Socket AM2+ (940 pin), AMD Phenom™ (95 W), Athlon™ 64 X2, Athlon 64, and Sempron™ processors".
I know it says AM2+ but everyone keeps saying AM3 is backwards compatible. I couldn't find anything for bios for my motherboard and I noticed most of the other computers (Gateway DX4300s, I have DX4300-03) use the same motherboard and have Phenom II X4s that are AM3. I also made sure to buy the 95W version. Lets hope it all fits together lol.
Edit: I was checking with CPUID PC Wizard and it says under processor tab, Support: Socket AM3 (939). Idk how accurate the program is though.

Re: CPU
Okay, what manufacturer made your motherboard? AM2+ does not guarantee that the Phenom II X4 will work. CPUID Wizard is useless, in my eyes. Try CPU-Z for CPU information, Everest for support and anything else. You can only visit your manufacturer's CPU list for compatibility.
I'll look it up for you if you tell me your hardware components.

Re: CPU
Its from gateway, the RS780 and I already know it supports "AMD® Socket AM2+ (940 pin), AMD Phenom™ (95 W), Athlon™ 64 X2, Athlon 64, and Sempron™ processors". Guess I was hoping it would support this AM3 since I couldn't find a AM2+ Phenom II that was under 125W. I'll end up having to sell it then, oh well.

Re: CPU
For starters, Gateway is not a manufacturer, just a cheap 3rd party seller. They do not manufacture any core components.JCL wrote:Its from gateway, the RS780 and I already know it supports "AMD® Socket AM2+ (940 pin), AMD Phenom™ (95 W), Athlon™ 64 X2, Athlon 64, and Sempron™ processors". Therefore, after a little Google search, your 'RS780' is in fact a Foxconn A7GM-S motherboard, with the AMD 780G chipset.
Information for the motherboard:
http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/M ... -us0000371
Now, it says there it support Phenom II processors, so you might be lucky. I cannot access the manual for the motherboard because I receive a 404 Error on their website. In any case, it might be worth a try. Good luck. Tell us how it goes!

Re: CPU
Thanks for looking up the info. I talked to a guy from Eggxpert who has a DX4300-05 (mines 03) but they both came with the same hardware. He has the same processor and said it works as the Foxconn RS780 is AM3 ready.
