Hello all,
I had come across and registered to this site a while back but never thought of posting or much else. I feel I have some time and I feel responsible to help the cause! A little background - I started EQ1 when I was 10, instantly hooked! Played EQOA, Legends of Norrath and now EQ2. I recently quit EQ2 do to real life changes, and the fact that the game was getting stale for me. I sometimes remember back to the good ole days of playing 7 days a week and sadly get a little twitchy to re-install.
I played EQ2 very hardcore since the launch, I have been in some of the top guilds WW as far as raid progression goes such as NPU, Tyranny, Ethereal Legacy and others. I thrive on experiencing everything in the game, and enjoy being the first to do so.
Sadly, I have no programming skills at all. I still feel obligated to help with whatever I can. I have literally done all there is to do in the world of EQ2 up until the end of TSO. I would love to be able to put my knowledge of the game to use and help in any way possible.
I feel the game has lost a lot of the magic, that I felt when I first started playing. So many of my friends that I have made over the years have agreed, the ability to run your own server would bring the life back.
Please let me know if there is anything my knowledge of the game can help with. Sorry I can't be much help in other, more important ways.

Welcome!
Game knowledge is very helpful during implementation of a new system. If you have a ton of patience, and can wait for us to get through this accursed Sentinel's Fate client compatibility phase, we might be discussing a new loot and ground spawns system soon. In put is always welcome on how we "think" SOE does things. Check the Server Development forums for past discussions, and feel free to add to/correct any of our open discussions.
Also, playing the game while the collector is running is very helpful. While we plan to only release content in order of expansion, collecting *any* zones fully would be a plus. The only hesitation I have is that SOE seems to be in a mode of changing their entire game every 6 mos
so sometimes collecting can get to be redundant. Regardless, it helps us build more functionality into the emulator to support all the new styles of game SOE comes up with. Once we have all game mechanics emulated, folks can run whatever type of server they wish... classic or modern.
That's the plan anyway....

That sounds great! I have never been a part of something like this before. Like I said I know the game inside and out, but not on the level of trying to recreate it. What you guys are doing is incredible. I just reinstalled the game today, I plan on getting from 1-90 in a few days to try and remember it all from the start. Feel free to get in touch with me in game, and check my progression. Oasis.Amazing
You say the goal is to be able to make your own server, classic or modern. I always wondered, could you make it as if it were day 1 of the game launching? How would you go about playing the game as if none of the xpacs were released, including the Game Updates. Is that even possible?
I have always wanted a "Progression" style server. Where you cannot unlock the next xpac until the previous one has been 100% completed. (Raid Progression wise) ie. DoF would not be released until Darathar, SotL, and all the contested had been slain. I believe something like that would draw in a HUGE crowd to the game. If something like that is possible, I would do whatever it takes to help make it happen.
Also, don't hate my ignorance when it comes to this sort of stuff but.. How do I enable a "collector" as you called it?

Re: With whatever I can
You get the collector from me directly. I only give it out to those who actually plan to collect data and turn it in to us for processing. We currently do not need any data from Shattered Lands levels 1-20, but 21-50+ we do. We also need most data for every expansion/adventure pack after the original game was released.
There's a thread on how to collect, you should go check it out and see if it's something you want to do. Setup is simple, collecting is rather involved. I doubt you'd get from 1-90 in a few days while collecting
I got from 1 - 9 in about 2 weeks collecting every little thing

Welcome to the Community Vanero, a veteran is welcome with open arms.
One of the things you mentioned has come up a lot, to make EQ2 like it was at launch would require us to have the information that was available at launch. Which we simply don't have access to, as all of our data and understanding on a coding level is fed to us through the collector.
Yet I am certain with sufficient proficiency, patience, and perhaps a source of information, hit tables, spells, their effects etc on launch day you could get Eq2 to being VERY similar to that very hour.
