Collecting EQ2 Extended Data

Post by John Adams » Sat Sep 11, 2010 12:23 pm

While this client is not (yet) supported with the EQ2Emulator server, I am happy to report that collections of game data is still possible using our packet collector - so that means (at least for Free content?) we can still collect data for the emulator database - and this means it should be even easier to do so because the game is "free".

Granted, for totally Free play, we will miss various class/race combos and their data, and likely zone content (not really sure what is limited yet), but it certainly should be plenty of data to keep us busy developing content for some time to come.

Anyone interested in collecting data for EQ2Emulator via the EQ2X client (F2P) should send me a PM requesting the Collector, and your intentions (or questions) of what you plan to collect.
  • We still need to maintain careful control over who acquires our collector tool, because in the past, some have proven untrustworthy and chose to use it to create destructive/cheating tools for the live game - and that will get EQ2Emulator shut down faster than a Halfling can eat a dozen jumjum pies!
Hopefully we can get EQ2X client working with the emulator soon(tm) and all will be right with the world. Meanwhile, thank you again to all those who are - or have been - submitting content data to our project. Without you, we'd have an empty world!

John,

Though I'd be the first to let you know we can not send you private messages via this board, you have them disabled. I tried sending a reply to you and it wouldn't allow me.

I haven't ever had a single problem with PM's...

But maybe it's because I am the forum god.

Out of a thought, didn't Sony also release a program that could hide background actions from other programs? Blizzard got PISSED over this, considering that program could effectively hide a hacking program, like Cheat Engine from Blizzard's "Warden" program. This could effectively be used to hide your packet collecting program from Sony's launcher and allow you to continue data collection, am I correct?  There was a big news story over this about half a year to a year ago.

Edit: big smile :D + lightbulb

I am under the impression that EQ2X hasn't been live for over 6 months, let alone a year. Given the diversity, and thouroughness of Sony. It's a very safe guess in saying they found a way around that hiding program, but this is just a guess.

Couldn't you just run wireshark while playing eq2, then sniff the data from the collected wireshark file?

NO...data is encrypted, if it wasn't we would still be collecting data.
