Mysterious Zone Crashing bug

We may be onto something! I am noticing a pattern (besides this only happening to Xinux on EQ2TC )

Twice this week now, I saw Xinux' toon online, Queen's Colony, which has NPC Factions fighting each other constantly. At some point, and all of a sudden, the zone stops responding... thus, it is deadlocked, crashed, or otherwise unavailable for connections. These are the log entries I've seen twice now:

You'll notice the NPCs are the only ones in combat, and then right in the middle, crash/deadlock. There are NO messages coming from Zone or World to tell us wtf is going on. And aside from putting enter/exit logging in everywhere, I have no way to debug this. I cannot add this excessive logging, due to the fact our Logging system is not queued messaging, so the log entries just blow up the log into an unreadable mess.

BUTT! I think this is where the crashes are happening. I am going to disable NPC Hatred towards each other for a while, and see if the problem goes away.

Day 1 without Hate in the World -- No crashes, no lockups. I saw a player playing the hell out of our QC content, including collections, combat, spells, looting, and even death (though the second death did kill the client ) - All perfectly normal. Previously, not 1 player could enjoy 10 minutes of fun without the server locking up.

I'm letting Test run without NPC faction-based combat for the duration of this week, just to see if it halts again. If not, we've found our bug.

Did you ever find anything in this code? I know you were looking at it over the weekend, but haven't had time to check SVN nor saw any posts about amazing discoveries. Hope you found something causing zone deadlocks!

If not, maybe we need to loosen the in-code catches that are preventing the actual bugs from getting exposed via Crash? I'd take an exe crash right now over not knowing wtf is going on.

So I am convinced that this is where our problem lies. And, I am a little concerned now that it has something to do with the LogWrites() I have added, since it all seems to have started around the time I hit the code with all these logging commands.

EQ2TC has been "frozen" since 4/16/2012, and no one noticed - because not one player thought it necessary to come tell us the server was not responding for 9 days.


Scat, I will leave it running in this state for now if you have time to take a peek. This is the first time this has happened since your zoneserver fixes, so it was a good run - but something else must still be happening. I tried to pause/step into, but got nowhere. I have no idea what is stuck.

Here is what I have determined is pretty consistent. If a player attempts to log in, but does not get all the way in for whatever reason, the next person in freezes up that zone. Other zones will take players still, but Queen's Colony, in this case, is locked. This also seemed to NOT happen when NPC Faction combat was disabled, if you recall.

Looks like a character got deleted here (Hops)

And at this point, no zone shutdown for 9 days, and no more access to the server, even though it appears a new player tried to connect (different account) at 18:55:04, and oddly, the first thing to happen was ProcessQuestUpdates()? That doesn't seem right.

By this point, everything entirely has stopped working.

Scatman, though I think I've said this elsewhere, here's a confirmation. This is 100% (ONE HUNDRED, BABY!) reproducible if a player fails to connect fully at any attempt. The next login will be blocked, and subsequent attempts will render the entire server inert.

I have watched this happen time and again on EQ2TC the last month, with the last time it happening being only moments after the last time it started up. So I have two theories now; 1) Something we've done recently has completely fooked new player creations, or 2) some jackass is reading how this fooks up the server and making it their life's work to destroy the only working server we have.

I'll lean towards option 1), because ever since we left the 6118L client, I can almost never create a character on the first try. Just sayin there are ways to get this to happen, let's see if we can make it happen in our local dev environments.


PS: I have disabled Faction-based combat on EQ2TC, so you're going to see NPCs bumbling around bumping into each other until this situation is resolved. Open Season declared on tainted Sapswill invaders!

The one thing I usually suspect right off is the massive find/replace - style LogWrites() I added one day, thinking I got the regexp right, and might have completely screwed a return somewhere. Recall the logging was so spammy, I took them out, but couldn't revert code, because too much had been changed - so I MANUALLY removed them. This caused all sorts of screwed up and malformed sprintf's and such.

However, I spent a solid week fixing all that crap, but could have missed a return, or a { } I might have added where there were none before. I always blame myself first (if I cannot find a clear path to blaming Zcoretri, that is) until Scat shows me I am not as bad as I think at C++

Right here, my 1096 box crashed out just standing there watching Scatman get his ass handed to him by Defender Bristlebrow. I then re-logged him back in, but the client got stuck loading resources/entities and hung there for a few mins. So I exited the client, relaunched and joined the game.

Soon as I did, I think Scatman died because I couldn't heal him with that toon. Soon as he Revived, I stepped up to Bristlebrow myself and started a fight. When I got about 50% health, and could not even heal MYSELF, the zone froze. We stood there with nothing moving or working, and the chat to follow was Scat asking for the lay of the land --

Jabantiz crashed turning in a quest in another zone, which was functioning fine so this is probably something broken in the 1096 Quest functionality - please look into that. Make sure our LUA for pre-1096 is not crashing 1096+ clients.
