Hey again!

Post by Gangrenous » Sun Apr 24, 2016 7:15 am

I am a bit surprised to see so few servers created for Eq2Emu. I know many of you, if not all of you are working on the Vanguard emulator now. I will be going in full steam into this project now. I am definitely not asking anyone to come back to this project, Vanguard needs plenty of love also. But I will be creating a full server here, website, tools, everything. I am not sure of the name of the server. Currently I used one of my Everquest server names but that will change. My C++ knowledge has gotten way more advanced since the last time I even looked at the this project, I hope that will aid me. I have three running EqEmu servers now, but I need something new to challenge me. I am basically just going to put them on life support and move forward.

So my thoughts are this, I see others before me have had the same idea but no one has moved forward with it. I want to create a more eq classic version of EQ2. I am talking no leashing, less spells, harder to obtain AA, less items in the game. I always thought EQ2 threw way too much at you. I have seen a few death bugs that will have to be fixed pretty quickly, that is already driving me nuts so that it first priority. I will probably keep many of the quest the same, it will be a molding of classic EQ and EQ2. Anything I did not like in EQ2 will get pulled. Things that I loved in EQ1 will get put into EW2, probably even some of the classic quest. I am mainly doing this for myself but I may get a few players in the process, time will tell. My C++ skills will not be as high as the majority of you, I learn by a lot of trial and error. My LUA and MySQL skills are much better that my C++ skills but the only way I have learned C++ is from my need of fixing bugs.

I am actually glad I did things in this order. The skills I learned working on my EQ1 servers, and managing them will help me actually achieve this. I have a lot of catching up to do, tons of forum post to read. Luckily a lot of the structure of the database and source here does have some resemblance to the EQ1 source.

I was just reading some of the past developer chat logs and the problem with me dying and ending up flat on the ground when I log back in, I guess that could be a client issue.

Welcome to our community. I have never switched to vanguard, I do help them out when it is asked of me but my focus has always been here. That being said our team has always been small and we all have busy rl's which results in rather slow development here. All of our content is on the content svn and there are a lot of user made tools on the tools svn though some tools are extremely old and out of date, there is source code for most of them, info for those svn's can be found on the SVN link on the left.

If you have any questions feel free to post or send me a pm and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I am noticing one small bug. If you die and then close your client, then log back in you are still showing the death appearance. This could be client related though.

I have spent the night so far just getting familiar with the database, source and reading the wiki.

Speaking of that, what client is the absolute most compatible at the moment? I have about 6 different revisions.

The best is a client released just after CoE but there is no way to get that client unless you happened to back it up, the next is the DoV box set with our patch. After that recent live clients have been ok-ish, though I have fallen behind on the past few patches, after GU100 goes live I will get that client working with the emu.

As for logging in dead, that is how live use to work, not sure if it still does as I haven't tested that in a while. If you are not getting the revive window upon logging back in then that is a bug. I am also assuming you didn't actually revive before closing the client btw.

Yes, that is what I am referring to. Lets say you die, leave the death window up but do not actually revive. Now close the client. Then log back in, you will be at zero health. Your appearance will still be dead, but the death window does not pop back up. I think a simple check upon login against either HP would be sufficient. I did a quick check before I went to sleep and could not find a function already in place to check HP, but it was a quick check so I may had missed it. Overall I do not think a fix would be hard.

I believe we have spawn->IsAlive() that will check the hp but yea it should be a quick fix.

I finally got this up on the Dev SVN, sorry these fixes are taking so long, today is the first day in a couple weeks I could actually sit down and open up the code.
