A fairly major request...

Post by John Adams » Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:54 pm

Just thinking down the road, and while this will not effect most server admins out there, I just noticed something that got me worried...
EQEmu compiles a 'world' and 'world.exe'. So does EQ2Emu. POSIX boxes are smart enough to know the difference when running more than one 'world', but Windows likely isn't (guessing).
Request: *ducks behind a crate*
LE, can we change the name of the World.exe to something else? Maybe EQ2World.exe?
The reason I noticed this is that on one of my linux machines, I run EQEmu - and I just tossed EQ2Emu on there too, which run together just fine as far as I can tell in separate sessions. However, I have a script for terminating EQEmulator that - today for the first time I ran while EQ2Emu was running) and my 'kill world' ripped them both down. :)
I have worked around this issue for now by simply using restricted user accounts for each emulator, so one does not have the permissions to terminate the other. But this got me thinking... and you know me, Chicken Little Head...
Thoughts? Concerns? Not that important? Just letting you know.

Mmm, I see what you mean. But I doubt many people will have this problem.
I call for a vote! If more than 25% of people want this, then it should be done. Power to the minority!

Edit: Come to think of it, I do not appreciate my post being edited and turned into a poll. Please put it back, and open your own poll on the same subject.
I do not feel this is something to be voted on, where a thread is just as good for gathering opinion.

I've coded on everything from lineage, lineage2, ultima online, eve, eqemu, darkeden, wow (ascent, mangos, emulates, wowwow, wowd, ewow), and now eq2emulator.
I do see a possible issue only if your new to emulation and the running of both servers at the same time.
I've worked with tcsmyworld, devnoob, wiz, lethal even though he may not recall it ;) and many others: eqemu's and eqemulator's world.exe would still only cause an issue from someone who runs a true posix, linux or unix based server versus windows which would be too clunky to maintain a large number of servers without truly be a system/network admin such as myself or others out there IMHO... don't feel there is a real need for the change since it could be done on a as needed basis by what about 4 simple steps...
1. rename project
2. rename any declarations to the project name
3. change any project declarations to reference the new name
4. compile
hope that doesn't sound bad, just an opinion
just my two coppers ;)

Hey, I remember Tommy_Six_Pack and Soulfood :)
As I stated initially, likely not a problem for 99% of the people - and not even a problem for me. Just a consideration.
Like two separate companies naming their product Notepad.exe. ;)

Definitely a 50/50 about the world.exe though

"I will never run into this problem." I'm only planning on running EQ2 emu. However, in the future, if I decide to run a different emu, it will be on a different box :)

I'm sorry John, it won't happen again.

I would rather a EQ2Emu.exe or at least an EQ2World.exe as well.

Heh, it's alright John. I need to be disciplined sometimes to be put in my proper place ;).
I would actually prefer a new version name EQ2World.exe or something alike. Now that I think about it, it would be a little easier to manage.
