Net Neutrality Gone

Post by Cynnar » Thu Dec 14, 2017 4:07 pm

Looks like net neutrality lost out this time. Now our ISP's can do pretty much whatever they want whenever they want. To me personally it is a shame that the majority of the people wanted to keep the net neutrality in place, but yet the people's voice doesn't matter. Maybe it's time to move on a new direction, like mesh networking for instance. I'm all for a change.

Decentralized internet will be coming, either via tor protocol or ethereum.

I mean, I still need internet access to begin with to access the Tor protocol or make transactions on the Ethereum network, right?

This is relevant to these discussions though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B0u6nvcTsI

Yeah unfortunately there still has to be an isp. I like the idea of decentralized internet, but it's not common and needs everyone connected to something like a mesh network to work (as far as I can tell anyway). That's not convenient so it will probably be a long time before it's useable. Other methods might be closer and/or more popular, but it's still going to be hard to compete with convince.

Plus I don't know if it's possible to have server side only data with decentralized network. For example a database you don't want everyone to have users login information. Last I read it wasn't possible yet, but I haven't read up on it in some time.

I've seen the firestorm of panic about Net Neutrality this past week, but what people seem to fail to realize is that Net Neutrality only became "a thing" 2 years ago (2015) so, what's all the fuss? If the ISPs didn't screw you before, the only reason they'll screw you now is because you're complaining about how they will be screwing you and giving them the idea :)

Europe (and I thing almost any non-US services) have been screwing their customers for decades. It's our turn :)

PS: I should charge $4.99/mo via my ISP for anyone to access EQ2Emu! Retirement plan, solved.

*sigh* Yeah I know that. My problem is that I like using Google for searching, and since you can find a good number of *cough*torrents*cough* legal and not so legal then it's possible for some smart ass to say we are not going to allow you to visit any Google related sites. Does it mean it's actually going to happen, especially to Google, most likely not.

What if my isp is mad at my bank due to their issue with them, and I can no longer access my bank?

What I'd you are like tyrbo and I with only one isp, or satellite only? I have no choice but to suffer anything that my isp does to me. I know all to well what providers that have customers by the balls will do. How is 25MBs with 150GB data for a small fee of only $200 a month for ya? No other providers so guess what! Yeah I know all too well.

Ok stopping the rant now. :)

Heh. That was kinda my point. ISPs have been screwing customers since they became a thing. Some “rule” created 2 years ago did not stop them. But now, I imagine they’re getting some good ideas from posts like these

Not that they weren’t already going to do it and some folks tried to stop them. And failed. Even the law cannot stop greed.

Ok so it went way over my head.

Yeah it's all out war! We need to hit them where it hurts! So everyone drop your isp next year.
