Food / Water and consumption

I see where you can flag the character for CF_FOOD_AUTO_CONSUME, but as far as I know there is not actually consumption correct? I need to develop a system for my server, since it is custom. I just want to make sure that it has not been implemented. Also how would you recommend doing it? Should I ride off another timer or setup a new one? I am leaning one setting a new timer since food does not need to be consumed that often. I would think many of the timers are more frequent and the longer those routines are, the more you are taxing the server. Thoughts?

Question 2:

I want to check the food or water slot and check for the item type now. I am guessing no routine already exist? I am not seeing one.

Can you be more specific about what you're trying to do?
