Login Server Files.

Post by Tyr » Mon Jul 28, 2008 8:21 am

I wanted to know what the possibility of getting the login server code and files once the emulator is live are. Since I intend to fully customize the game, there are certain components of the login server I believe would need to be customized as well, to reflect zone name changes, race name changes, ect, ect.
Now, if there is a way to do this all on the same login server without conflicting with others, all the better, one less thing I have to do, but thus far whenever I change a zone name, say changing South Freeport to testtesttest, it works great and all IN game, but once I log out to character select it still says “South Freeportâ€

Considering how previous conversations about "Login Server Code" have gone, I highly doubt the source will be released. But I believe a "minilogin" option might come to life after the emulator is completed and released.
Anyone who has been around a while knows why LS source usually does not get published, and knows not to ask.

Even if you ran your own login, there are certain issues that you would still have. In particular, they are race and class names. These are handled by the client, not the login server, and as such cannot be changed. Trust me, I have tried :P

Well, I can understand why he wouldn’t want the source code out there, it undoubtedly took a lot of work on his part, but I am not one to take credit for others work, and have no desire to claim it as my work. The thing is, I am a very thorough person, and the inconsistency would be something I would personally like to avoid if at all possible, if this could be provided by the mini-login, and if a large number of accounts could connect to the server via the mini-login, fantastic, problem solved.
This is a relatively small issue. But for anyone like me who wants to host fully custom content, and no live content, it would be a constant, consistent annoyance (for me at least)
IF getting the login server code, or just the files to run the server is completely out of the question, then so be it, the nuisance will remain, and I will just have to live with it, it’s hardly going to derail my project.
That being said, if some of us could obtain the information, perhaps on agreement to post a banner to the project on our server website, and give full unedited credit to those who work on it, then I would be happy to do that and more.
Also, I looked for this topic in search, and didn’t return any relevant information, so unless it’s in some obscure tread that got derailed, I have not seen this conversation take place.

You are completely missing the point. Not releasing the LoginServer source code has nothing to do with honor or who gets credit. This is not a WoW project, our tiny egos are not quite so frail.
It has to do with handing the keys to the client encryption over to >who knows who<, whom if ONE MAN owns that key, then there is no question about where else it lives. Believe me, it >WILL< fall into malicious hands. If you have never been involved in the EQEmu community, I suggest going over there and searching for login server source, and see the flame fests that arise when people start saying "Oh but I am a totally honorable dude. I'd never let anyone else have it".
Bullshit.
I also could be 100% wrong about how EQ2Emu LS works, I am just pulling from years of listening to this same debate rage at EQEmu. Psst, there's a reason the packet collector source is also never going to be available... get it now?
From my understanding of your intended project, I see absolutely no reason why your server cannot hook to the public LS and you simply tell your "paying customers" to pick your server from the list at character creation time. It's a no brainer, seriously. As for constant, consistent annoyances... I think you are obsessing over isolation just a tad much at this stage in development. None of us, LE included, know exactly how everything is going to shake out.
Relax, stop worrying about what it will or will not do, and let the emu get born - then cry about how it doesn't do what you want. :) After the fact, things might be easier to customize.

/sigh
Yes, I know what you’re talking about, and I did so before hand. However I don’t want to get into an argument about something this stupid so I am not going to state my opinions on the subject.
But I would like to clarify two things.
One: i hate WoW, I dislike most people who do like it, and I never mistook this as a “WoW projectâ€

Calm down guys. There are various reasons that I don't want to release the login server code. If I eventually quit the project I'll release the source, but until then I'll only release a minilogin after the code base is mature enough. PM me if you still have questions/comments about the login server and I might be able to tell you how much it can be customized. Who knows, I might be willing to put in some of your customizations.
