Wine EQ2 Error

Post by nyquist » Wed Aug 20, 2008 9:07 am

Before I get started, my setup:
Generic LCD monitor (upto 1600x1200)
Logitech Speakers
Custom Built Computer:
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT
3 GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel MoBo (DG965WH)
Western Digital Hard Drive
Ok, I was attempting to install EQ2 under Ubuntu using Wine 1.1.2 (I also tried version 1.0 after 1.1.2 failed)
I have successfully patched the entire game via launchpad, but as soon as the game window pops up I get the following error:

Code: Select all

<verify>
E:\live\eq2\framework\core\devices\src\DirectX9RenderDevice.cpp
Failed to create D3D object
I had deduced that this can be attributed to Wine or Wine's interaction with my GFX card, but I cannot figure out how to bypass or fix this problem.
I do not have the Nvidia Driver installed under Ubuntu (because they will not work no matter what I do, trust me I have tried almost everything, but suggestions are appreciated) but rather am still using the default Ubuntu Drivers. And wine was installed many times with no errors during any of the installations. (I can post more details about the EQ2 Error, the details spit out if I run it in console)
ANY help is appreciated...
(EDIT) Oh yeah, I have not even started trying to get the server to run, I first wanted to get EQ2 to run, to make sure that I had all the files, and so that I may debug the server easier.

Sorry to ask the obvious question, why is this an EQ2Emulator problem if you cannot get the published client developed by SOE to run on Ubuntu?
Maybe you should try the SOE forums?

This is definitely an O/S related problem. Post on the Ubuntu forums as some more experienced users can surely help you out there. Wine is still practically in Alpha with thousands of applications, don't EQ2 to work.

Eq2 will run acceptably under wine, if you follow the suggestions in their knowledge base. Unfortunately for you, nvidia's driver is absolutely required as the open source drivers don't support 3d acceleration. If you can get some help from the Ubuntu forums to get the driver installed, you should be good to go.
