When you buy an item, there is no text outputted to the chatbox I noticed. It should say, "You purchase [item name with link] for [price]" or something along those lines. I'll have to log on live to verify.
Also, I'm not sure if you've gotten there with this yet but when I purchase a stack of items (20) from a merchant, I see the item in my inventory but it doesn't tell me I have 20 of them. But, when I sell the item back to the merchant, it tells me I have 20 of them in the sell window and it does sell 20 back. It's just a visual thing in the player's inventory. Also, I know there is a message displayed when you sell an item also, I'll have to check what it is exactly.

Yah, this is just a bug with items in general. Hopefully this weekend I can give the item system a much needed overhaul.

Something else I learned about the little number/asterisk in merchant windows:

Seems if the item has a "charge", that value is shown as a stack? Though you can only buy 1 (the items themselves do not stack).
Make sense? (tell me you love my swooshy arrows

)

When I redesign items, I'll rename the 'count' field 'charges' and use it for things like this.

Two more things with merchants; one probably caused by Items which are being reworked.
When you Buy (Stack) and do not have the cash for the whole stack, you get the message that you cannot afford that - which I believe is ok. But the button changes to Buying... and sticks there for a few minutes.

Also note in this screen shot (the second part related to Items), Alfa reports items on the merchant should not "con" blue, or green? Just grey, white, or red? I am not sure where this color is coming from, but it's likely data. Just mentioning it in case the merchant display code needs to strip the consider colors before displaying?

Testing the "item con" on merchants, I noticed something else odd. The first time you open the merchant and mouse-over an item, the Examine window pops up. Do it again, just the tooltip is displayed.

A new twist on an old question... Collecting merchant lists.
Previously, when we didn't have the super huge list of Items we have now, we were going to each and every merchant, highlighting every item, examining it or at least mousing over every item in every merchant - which takes a considerable amount of time. I figured we were doing that mostly to get as many items as we could.
Now that we have so many items, and all we need are the names of items in the merchants list itself - is it safe to assume for collecting merchant Lists, all we have to do is OPEN the merchant? Everything is displayed in that initial dialog. Or, do we still have to mouse-over/examine every merchant item for the collector to link said item to the merchant?
Thanks

Yup, you should be fine just viewing the merchant list.
