This is what I'm talking about. Keeping the project alive by offering to help out, any way we can. The project is only as "dead" as you, the community, dictates. Just because me, Scatman, or Zcoretri (core dudes) might be tired of waiting for help, doesn't mean y'all cannot continue the effort. I'm sure we'll jump in here and there, but any expectation that these 3 guys are somehow going to write this entire game ourselves... well, get over that
I am still maintaining the Project Admin title, namely because all the sites and services are under my control, and I'll likely own the domain name soon. And I think anyone who knows me at all knows, I am here daily at least... and anyone needing commit access to SVN (once they have proven an interest in consistent development of this project) can have it. Otherwise, post your Diffs to the Code Submissions forum in the mean time.
Read: Don't ask for Commit access unless you are in it for the long haul. Too much effort to set permissions up to have the new dev flake out in a week.
JCL, still waiting for your coding expertise, my man.

Bring it.

How come you decided on Lua compared to the original format of Perl for the quest system?

Because LUA is English and Perl is jUsThOwHaRdDoEsAlAnGuAgEnEeDtObE01001011?
I actually did not decide that, LE did, and after seeing LUA (compared to writing scripts for EQEmu in Perl), I was convinced LUA was better. Plus, our LUA system breeches Quests only, into many aspects of our emulator like zone scripts, events, spells, movement, spawns, and the list goes on.
This is EQ2Emulator - so there was no "original Perl system". Many other emulators (modern) use LUA as a scripting engine.

Wow, This is quite depressing
Where is the enthusiasm I had back in 2005 when I first started tail-boning this project!?!
I wish I could contribute more to this project, but university and part time jobs are keeping me too occupied to devote time to this project. It makes me sick.
I'd just like to give Lethal a pat on the shoulder. Whatever the outcome of this project is, you really put your back into it, along with all of the other names. John. Zcoretri. Zexis.... etc
As for my opinion...
Well, I think you guys should consider dropping the green light attitude regarding the client. Emulators have and will always be a gray area of law. We need to start hosting or providing players with a means to easily obtain access to these servers. Generally, that means a big "CLICK HERE TO JOIN" button which launches an installer or some kind.
Best of luck mates, I'm off to watch some world cup soccer. Its in my backyard, afterall

Welcome on the boards!
Its nice to see some new coders interested in helping! I'm sure John will contact you quickly so you can get started.
See you around

John's busy with some real world stuff at the moment, but grab the latest source code from the SVN, and have a look at what needs to be done and go for it!
We'll give you full access when John makes a return.

I have been 'monitoring' the svn. The old svn has code, but the new one doesn't yet. I have the code from the old one but haven't tried to compile or even look at it yet.
Just an FYI.
I know John is busy, this can wait.

-May I suggest porting the project to .Net C# ?
I know its a little late now, but if someone could help me port the entire project to C#, there would be much more support from the community (in my opinion)
If I was to dedicate some time to helping out then it would take me much less time to port the fundamentals to C# than to research c++
Universities dont teach C/C++ anymore, unless you are studying engineering of some kind
Edit:
If anyone is actually interested in this idea, please send me a PM. I know some people will discard this idea as *too much*, but there are some open source C# projects that we could use as a starting point, like the "Cell" project, they offer a generic MMORPG server with some very good .Net socket handling already in place.

there is no way people are gonna wanna port the project to C#, a lot of people know C++, they may not teach it in schools but ya know.
Its just the fact that EQ 2 doesnt have a huge following, and the following it has most arent coders

I agree with Astal, C++ is not the problem. And C++ is still very active at the level in which we're developing this emulator, and many other emulators (that are not Java /boggle). C# is nice for "I don't really want to pay for a real engineer, so I'll hire some kid out of school for $20/hr to drag and drop tools and the IDE writes my code for me" modern rush-jobs in the business market...
But all our low-level code at work is still C++ at it's core, because it's amazingly powerful. C++ not dead. This project is. Getting a few more developers interested is the solution, not re-writing the entire thing in (yet another fad) language.
That said... this is Open Source. The code is yours. There is no harm in doing what you suggest. I'll even host/support the effort here if you get it to take off, with Forums and SVN(s). Just stating I myself am not really interested in C# as a solution, because the problem isn't language - it's interest.

ok i'll pray for you, but i want a hermetically sealed, sound proof room to put this "small car engine" of a computer away where i don't have to hear it
