I would agree with whats been posted already. I did want to mention that if the project was ported to c# then we lose the linux crowd. I for one, will always use debian (or at least a flavor of linux) for a server. Windows is just to much of a resource hog to actually be devoted to a server box. (Not to mention money hog!)

I have run an eqemulator server as both windows xp and debian, the debian seemed to work better and it was on a system with less resources.

Just my 2 coppers worth.

I do agree with John, forge ahead.

I understand your opinions, makes sense.

However, just want to clear up something for people who dont seem to understand what I meant by the suggestion:
C# projects do not take years (or decades, in this case)
C# might not support as many connections, as it is a higher kernel level language, but in most cases that I have seen... it serves its function quite well. Teamspeak (voice chat) server used to support 5500 concurrent connections when it was still written in native code (c++) and after it was ported to C#, it was able to sustain 2500 connections without much of an issue. Same thing with MMO-servers previously written in C# (Like CELL) which is able to support 2000+ World of Warcraft users with full functionality.

Im just trying to say that C# is (although easy to learn) a very powerful development platform.

Also, C# (dotNet) projects arent limited to win32 boxes. I have several debain machines running C# apps.

Lastly, the aforementioned emulator (CELL) was built from scratch in under 6 months with only 3 (part time) developers.

Awesome work on the db side of things John, I'd love to check out the live build to see whats brewing - whens that SVN comming back up?

The SourceForge SVN is still in place, just not being updated. The new GoogleCode SVN (taking SourceForge's place) is up with the same code from SourceForge.

The Dev SVN is locked down to only those on the team, actively helping with continuous C++ development ;)

And what I am working on creating next is the SVN for Content, which will be in the aforementioned GoogleCode SVN eventually for public consumption. There are also links to the ServerPack, completely popped with our Alpha data, and download links for the current DB as well in the DB Release post.

Tear it up!

Hi all,

I have been visiting the EQ2 emulator site for years as a guest but this is my first post, I think its been awesome watching things evolve over the years and think you have done an awesome job. As you are asking people to step up and help I would like to offer what I can.

Im an application and testing support IT guru with 8 years experience. While I cant make myself available for coding I can assist with testing when the project enters beta phase.

Let me know in pm if you need my services Ill be checking in every day from now on as I want this to succeed, EQ2 is my favorite MMO by far.

It seems things are taking off.

I was collecting packets at one time, but Halas was getting very difficult for one person to do.
I'd love to collect packets again as I only have two college classes and am free Monday, Wed, Friday, Sat, Sun and Tues & Thurs after 5.

Let me know if you still need help!

We've been having some very interesting problems with the collector in hundreds of different ways. Once we get that working, we'll let you get back to collecting. Please refrain from using it now, however.

What exactly does content development entail?

Development entails a lot!! First, I see that we need to work on the client connections as only certain clients work with the servers. I see the logging is needing help (I'm working on that with my server). The servers need to be populated with mobs/loot/motion/working doors and lifts.. And of course, all needs to be tested :)

I get sucker into buy another copy of EQ2 just for this project to see what I can do about the client issues. Also I'm working on the logging with my server. The one I currently have up is temporary. I'm going to make another at my house that will be more permanent, but not as fast.

I'll work on anything I can, I've got pretty good knowledge of C++, just assign me to something =) I'll try working on it asap.
I'll try to hit up IRC more, now that i've got a lot of time on my hands.
