Unable to find client ( /tell )

Post by John Adams » Fri Jan 02, 2009 3:18 pm

This is new, though I have heard reports of it before - I hadn't experienced it until this week. Occasionally, you try and send a tell to someone and World tells you it cannot find the client. Tells have always worked for me, but Scatman reported once a few weeks ago he suddenly couldn't send tells anymore - after we had been using tells all afternoon.

Now that it's happening to me it's an issue. :D haha well also, Nalandial reported it yesterday as well, so I knew it wasn't just poor Scat.

This is using the latest dev SVN (as of this post). I am not sure if this is post-TSO or before. Maybe Scat can remember the first time he started seeing the problem.

It is pre-TSO. I was trying to figure out when it was happening and it appears to be happening after zoning. I know that's not a lot of information but since we use /ooc so much it's hard to figure out exactly when it happens.

I rewrote a couple of the functions. Let me know if you still have issues with it.

Could you hop on my server later and help me test it?

We're using /tell on my server in debug mode without issue so far. I'll let you know if it comes up again.

Argh!! Just when I thought this one was put to bed, I cannot send a /tell to Bersus who has been zoning all over testing doors... but I can /tell Scatman and anyone else who are just hanging out in a zone.

We can do more /zone testing on your server whenever you like, LE.

There is one possibility that I could think of for that to still happen. If the player was disconnected and then logged back into the game before the first connection was destroyed, whenever the first connection was destroyed the global reference by player name would be removed as well. If this was the problem I solved it this time. The updated code will be on SVN shortly.

That is a possibility for sure. We "desynch" on a regular basis now. Forewarning, I am going to start crying about that real soon, because it is totally disruptive to be trying to work on something and get thrown under the world and disconnected and have to log back in and find where you were. ;)
