Signs not working in 1096 client (private server)

First, the usual.
I have the latest structs, all of them.
I have the latest opcodes, whatever's on PatchServer.
I have the latest code, compiled after a clean.
I have the spawn, and spawn_signs records populated properly.
I have thought of everything. Except that 1 thing you're about to tell me is still wrong
I log in 2 clients - a 1008 client, and a 1096 client. The 1008 client can mouse over a door and see it glow, and see the tooltip, and click it to zone. The 1096 client cannot do any of the above. I have not tried this with non-zone "signs". FWIW, I had this same problem trying to engage a Merchant on my server the other day, but assumed it was my data. The 1096 client could not see the coin stack mouseover tool on my manually created Merchant, but when I logged into EQ2TC, it could.
I am of course blaming my DB again, because if this were the case that 1096 couldn't "use" anymore, someone else would have spoken up by now.
Suggestions?
