EQ2 Version Question

Post by milotoadfoot » Mon Jan 09, 2017 11:05 am

So I'm wondering if we can work on EQ2 emulation without any expansions.. Is that feasible or are we set on working with a set number of expansions?

Here is what I gathered about that.

First off there is no support for any client below DoV. That means any changes made from launch to DoV will be implemented. I don't know how far back a person could go using earlier source code, but it might be possible to go back further with client compatibility. Do take into account old source code will not have the functionality as the latest source, and offers no support.

As for content we do not have logs that far back, so someone would have to create it from memory, or if lucky maybe some YouTube vids for some parts. Finding that content is next to impossible as far as I have found. Others may have better luck than me though.

Those guys that worked on the emulator in the early days could tell you better if it is possible or not. So let's see what Jab, or one of the others says about it.

The furthest back the server can support is RoK Box and that would need some work to get it connecting to our current server now. Before that we have no packet logs so we can't figure out the communication easily so none of that is supported.

That being said in theory we could support an original client, just the guess work to figure out the packets would be a HUGE time sink and those who have tried have always given up before getting a player in the world.
