I was curious as to what the recomendations for a running server would be, I am about to purchase a dedicated hosting plan, and want to know if that would be of some use to the dev's of this project, and also what the legalities would be of running a server like that.
any feedback would be welcome

I would recommend a Linux server. It's more secure than a Windows one. As for specs, the original engine was designed for a 10GHz or faster single core processor (you should see the controversy going on the SoE forums over this one), but anyone running a server would be better qualified to tell you that one.

Any participation is useful and appreciated

The emu and database are open source. Running them on a server is perfectly legal.

Whatever hosting plan you buy, you need "shell access"... be that linux or not. You have to be able to remotely log into a console to compile and run the emulator server engine.
As to the boring debate of Windows vs Linux, whatever you prefer. Hackers are hackers, and can break into anything if they care enough. shrug.

While it's true Hackers can hack into anything if they're dedicated enough, it's also true that a small project like this will probably draw little to no attention from such dedicated sources. =)
No offense meant by calling it small, I love this project =P
